Christmas preparations start very early and go on for all the months ending in “BER”.
Thus, Christmas decorations and carols appear in September in The Philippines.
– “Parols”, or stars, blossom everywhere on the streets of Manila and in front of houses.
They represent the Wise Men’s Guiding Star which led them to Jesus when he was born.
– Simbang Gabi (Night mass): for 9 days before Christmas a novena of masses is celebrated late at
night to prepare for the coming of the Lord. In the provinces, they are more commonly called ‘misa
de gallo’ (rooster’s mass) as they are celebrated before dawn. This is a very popular tradition with
Philippinos, as families gather for these early morning celebrations.
– Pastores and Pastoras (shepherds): shows representing the shepherds in traditional clothing
in adoration before the Lord. Throughout the Christmas period, they knock at doors to sing and
dance, asking for a little money.
– Christmas celebration: after the last Simbang Gabi, Philippino families gather for a Christmas
party which generally goes on all night. Then they attend Christmas mass on the morning of the
25th, followed by Christmas day which is a true culinary feast. This is the time for exchanging gifts
and also visiting friends and neighbors.
